Watching Daddy Die

Watching Daddy die… It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It happened last night. One minute he was there, fighting for life, despite the ravages time had worked on his body. The next minute, he was gone. In my heart I know he’s in a better place.

But it doesn’t matter.

It still hurts.

When I hurt, I write songs. This one is for Daddy.

A Song For Daddy

You were the first man
To love me as I am
The first man
Who taught me how to stand

All my hurts and all my pains
Forgotten when you said my name
Running to your outstretched arms
To find my haven, safe and warm

And now that you have gone away
There’s only one thing I can say

Dad, I’m gonna miss you

And oh…
Why’s it have to hurt so badly
To lose my Daddy?

Dad, I’m gonna miss you

You were the first man
To wipe away my tears
The first man
To take away my fears

In your arms I learned to dance
And watching you, I learned romance
Learned to laugh and learned of love
That only comes from God above

And now that you have gone away
There’s only one thing I can say

Dad, I’m gonna miss you

And oh…
Why’s it have to hurt so badly
To lose my Daddy?

Dad, I’m gonna miss you

In loving memory of Dell Dearen (April 11, 1924—January 18, 2015)
